We’ve been doing it wrong the whole time.
The happiness model we’re taught from a young age is actually completely backward.
Work relentlessly and achieve big success, only then will you earn happiness. It looks like this:
Great Work → Success → Happiness
Most people go through their lives thinking,
“When I get (the promotion, the relationship, the dream house) I’ll be happy.”
“When I achieve (the degree, the six-figure salary, the C-Suite role) I’ll be happy.”
Well, turns out happiness doesn’t work like that — the model is backwards!
We do great work, achieve big success, but instead of being happy, we just set new goals. Rather than feeling proud, satisfied, and happy with our achievements, we get busy studying for the next job, the next degree, the next promotion. Why stop at a bachelor’s degree when you can get a master’s? Why stop at Director when you can be VP?
We never arrive at happiness. It just keeps getting pushed further and further away…
THE SCIENCE OF HAPPINESS
Before 1998, psychology largely focused on treating mental illness and much less on enhancing well-being and happiness in the wider population.
Times have changed — today I’m thrilled to see happiness recognized as a serious research topic. Among others, the University of Oxford published the "World Happiness Report", finding that our well-being powerfully impacts our health, education, work-life balance, and overall relationships. Even the US Surgeon General warns that loneliness is an epidemic, and connection is essential for our happiness and well-being.
In 2017, I became interested in learning more about the science of happiness. At first, my immersion into books and articles on the science of happiness was just a personal interest for my own happiness journey. I hadn’t thought about how it related to my work as a human resource, leadership, and organizational development professional and consultant.
Then, two years ago, it hit me: it has everything to do with my work!
Success in today’s business world means staying ahead of constant change — driven by competition, evolving tech, and rising client demands. The key? Focus on your people.
And happiness.
THE WORKPLACE HAPPINESS CRISIS
Employee unhappiness is an epidemic today. Gallup reports a staggering 85% of employees are unhappy with their jobs.
Why does having happy employees matter?
Because PEOPLE are the most important resource of any company. Successful businesses are built on great teams, which are made up of humans motivated by their thoughts and emotions.
Harvard Business Review reports that happy people are 31% more productive, have 37% higher sales, and are three times more creative than their counterparts.
Earlier we talked about how all the success, money, and advancement don’t automatically lead to happiness. So, where do we start to make employees happy?
As leaders, it’s our responsibility to set the precedent by prioritizing and embodying happiness and well-being both personally and professionally.
I founded the Stephanie Strozak Co. to bring about that change in workplace happiness. Our vision is a world where employees are happy, and every workplace is an amazing place to work.
THE NEW HAPPINESS FORMULA
Change begins when we approach the pursuit of happiness through this lens:
Be Happy → Great Work → Success
Now everything changes. Everything. When you learn how to be happy from within instead of relying on external circumstances to fill your cup, you start to feel great! You look great. You exercise. You connect. You find unshakeable motivation from within.
You end up doing great work because you feel great doing it, not because you’re relying on it to make you happy. What does great work lead to? Big success. Massive feelings of accomplishment and the resulting degrees, promotions, and big raises.
At Stephanie Strozak Co., we offer signature consulting and coaching programs that teach leaders and employees how to make happiness an inside job, so they can bring happiness to their workplace and break the cycle of pushing happiness further out.
STRIVING AND NEVER ARRIVING
Learning about this paradox had a massive impact on me. It meant that for most people, finally achieving their goal in life — getting a new job, making more money, being promoted, getting married, etc. — would not bring them sustained happiness.
Think about the last time you achieved a major goal. Did it bring you the happiness you expected? Or were you already thinking about what was next?
For many people, happiness is short-lived, and they spend their lives pursuing what they thought would make them happy, only to burn out from constant striving for another external happiness fix.
But, when you focus on internal happiness, you’ll realize you’ve already arrived at the destination. You already have everything inside you to experience lasting happiness — you just need to learn how to access it.
